Provence - Summer 2010
Our holidays in France are becoming a visit to the South of France
every other year. Again we were in Provence though further west this
time; another lovely area, the Alpilles. As usual we made our way down
staying in Logis de France,
after crossing from Rosyth to Zeebrugge for what, unfortunately, turns
out to have been the last year. Next time we'll have to travel south to
Newcastle or Hull, not quite so convenient.
Travelling south through the foothills of the Alps.

Lovely food in a Logis near Sisteron.
The square in Maussanne-les-Alpilles, the closest town to the gîte. |
Daudet's Mill - memories of schooldays for Marwyn and Fi. |
The Palais des Papes in Avignon. |
John was highly taken by this wonderful piece of sculpture, in front of the Palais des Papes.
The Pont d'Avignon from the song.
In the old town of Les Baux-de-Provence.
Fairly typical scenery in the Alpilles - a very picturesque area. |
The chapel of St-Sixte, near Eygalières. |
The Abbaye de Sénanque - we didn't realise they run a one-way road system in the summer as the access road is so narrow.
The hill town of Gordes, close to Sénanque. A spectacular location.
The Roman mausoleum at Glanum, near St-Rémy-de-Provence. This and the nearby arch are in a wonderful state of presrvation.
The garden in the hospital at St-Rémy-de-Provence, famous for Van Gogh's stay there.
Looking across the plain towards the sea from the top of the plateau at Les Baux-de-Provence. |
Inside the city walls of Aigues-Mortes. |
We visited L'Isle-sur-la-Sorgue, which is twinned with Penicuik where Marwyn worked some time ago.. |
Mont Ventoux is visible from much of the area, including Avignon.
We took the road to the summit where there are tremendous views on a
clear day. The white stuff is broken rock, not snow!

More lovely warmth - though the Mistral made it quite exciting at times. Not enough swimming for John though!
